Finn Church Aid (FCA) has allocated 50,000 euros from the organization’s disaster fund to support people affected by the two strong earthquakes in north-central Venezuela. Working with Lutheran World Foundation (LWF), who work in the region, the money will provide life-saving support to earthquake-affected people.
ON 24 JUNE 2026, two strong earthquakes, reported at approximately magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, struck north-central Venezuela in rapid succession. The government has declared a state of emergency, confirming at least 164 deaths and almost 1,000 injured, as of 25 June.
Priority concerns are life-saving search and rescue, emergency medical care, safe temporary shelter for families unable to return home, restoration of communications and electricity, and protection support for children, older people and other vulnerable groups. Continued aftershocks increase the risk of further collapses and complicate rescue and assessment efforts.
The earthquake is affecting a population already facing acute humanitarian needs, weak basic services and significant protection risks. International and local NGOs have deployed ambulances and rescue teams and are preparing shelter capacity while the full scale of displacement, damage and humanitarian needs is still being confirmed.
Both residential and commercial buildings have been damaged, including structural collapses in parts of Caracas and La Guaira, with hospitals receiving injured people and some critical infrastructure affected, including the main airport.
FCA’s partner, LWF, is already present in Venezuela and is conducting an assessment of needs. Through them, we will provide affected people with essential items, prioritzsing the most vulnerable.
‘This is a devastating tragedy, in which many lives have been lost. It is also very likely that the extent of the damage will turn out to be extremely widespread. That is why it is important that we can help during this disaster through our partner organization LWF”, says FCA’s Executive Director Tomi Järvinen
