FCA grants support to people affected by Nepal floods
Finn Church Aid (FCA) grants 20,000 euros from its disaster fund to support the regions affected by the floods in Nepal. FCA leads the emergency work by ACT Alliance in the region.
On the 26th of August severe flash floods swept through northern Nepal. At least 90,000 people were affected, over 900 have died and more than 4 200 are still missing. The FCA disaster fund has granted 20,000 euros in support to the people affected by the floods.
The floods in Nepal, triggered by a melting glacier, hit the Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts. The floods devastated towns, roads and bridges and lead to significant loss of life. Many people also lost their homes and everything they own.
Rescue efforts are still ongoing but have been suspended several times because of bad weather and the likeliness of additional floods.
FCA’s work will focus on cash transfers, providing temporary schools, early livelihood recovery and other needs that might emerge.
“This devastating catastrophe will affect Nepalese society for a long period of time. It is very important that those who have lost their homes and their livelihoods receive assistance to restart their lives and that the education of children can continue despite the current situation,” says FCA Executive Director Tomi Järvinen.
FCA will be leading the ACT Alliance response, working together with members like Dan Church AID (DCA), Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and International Nepal Fellowship (INF Nepal). The ACT Alliance response will focus on the later part of the emergency period and the following recovery period.
