FCA allocates 25,000 EUR to respond to the ongoing Ebola outbreak affecting vulnerable learners in Uganda<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

FCA has released 25,000 EUR from its Disaster Fund to respond to the ongoing Ebola outbreak affecting vulnerable learners in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in Kikuube District, one of the highest-risk areas in Uganda due to its proximity to the DRC border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE OUTBREAK<\/strong>, which is linked to cross-border transmission from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has heightened risks within schools supported by FCA, particularly in Kyangwali where overcrowding, limited WASH facilities, and inadequate infection prevention measures increase vulnerability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learners and school staff face significant disruptions, including fear of infection, reduced attendance, and strained learning environments due to the need for isolation spaces and enhanced safety protocols. Beyond the immediate health risks, the situation is contributing to mental and emotional distress among learners, driven by anxiety, stigma, and uncertainty associated with the outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FCA Uganda will use the funds to implement the SAFE Project (Safe Schools, Safe Communities: Ebola Prevention and Emergency Response in Kyangwali), a two-month emergency intervention aimed at strengthening infection prevention and control measures in schools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project will improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities, provide essential supplies such as handwashing stations, disinfectants and temperature screening devices, and support the implementation of Ministry of Health standard operating procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the funds will address urgent protection and psychosocial needs to promote emotional well-being and resilience among learners and staff, while ensuring continuity of safe learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The response will directly support approximately 37,855 students and 312 teachers across Early Child Development (ECD) centres, primary schools, secondary schools and Accelerated Education Programme (AEP) centres in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, with broader benefits for surrounding school communities and education authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response to the outbreak, FCA has already initiated coordination with government authorities, the Ministry of Health, WHO, UNHCR, OPM (Office of the Prime Minister) and other partners to support a timely and well-coordinated response, leveraging available resources and ongoing interventions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engagement with additional stakeholders, including local communities and humanitarian partners, is ongoing to mobilize further support to scale up prevention efforts, strengthen community awareness, and sustain longer-term preparedness and response measures within the education sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
