Finn Church Aid has supported 118,566 Ukrainians\u00a0in the midst of\u00a0war since 2022. Ukrainian children and young people still need unwavering support\u00a0to\u00a0see them through\u00a0their darkest\u00a0hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 24th,<\/strong> Ukrainians will mark an anniversary that no one wanted to see. Russia’s war of aggression began four years ago and continues today.\u00a0It is\u00a0crucial to\u00a0maintain\u00a0aid and support\u00a0to\u00a0Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, the war in Ukraine claimed the highest number of civilian lives<\/a> since 2022. This winter, Ukrainian have had to cope with extensive power cuts and an energy crisis amid Russia’s intensified missile and drone strikes.
\u00a0
Cities have set up tents and used generators to provide their residents with opportunities to heat their homes and charge their electronic devices. However, the destruction is\u00a0enormous\u00a0and its effects will extend far beyond emergency aid into the future. In addition to homes and infrastructure, Russian bombing has destroyed hundreds of schools. Last year alone, the war destroyed\u00a0340 educational institutions<\/a>\u00a0in Ukraine.\u00a0

Finn Church Aid (FCA) supports Ukrainians evacuated from cities on the front lines of the war with temporary accommodation, for example, with blankets, generators, and hygiene supplies.\u202fFCA\u00a0has\u00a0directed its support\u00a0mainly to\u00a0the Chernihiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv regions. Earlier this year,\u00a0FCA\u00a0also launched a joint\u00a0fundraising campaign<\/a>\u00a0with the Ukrainian Embassy in Finland to support Ukrainian civilians.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the harshest and most difficult winter Ukraine has experienced since the full-scale invasion began,” says FCA’s Country Director in Ukraine, Patricia Maruschak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Unfortunately, the needs are constantly growing. We are doing everything we can to make the conditions for Ukrainians more bearable,” Maruschak says.

FCA\u00a0works\u00a0with\u00a0education and\u00a0mental health\u00a0support<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

FCA\u00a0has been working to help Ukrainians since the first week of the war. The country office was\u00a0established\u00a0in Ukraine in the same year. In recent years, aid has focused particularly on supporting the schooling of children and young people.\u00a0The Ukraine\u00a0country office is currently one of FCA’s largest country offices worldwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since\u00a0the\u00a0country\u00a0office\u00a0was\u00a0established, FCA\u00a0has\u00a0helped\u00a0a\u00a0total\u00a0of 118,566 Ukrainians to the end of 2025.

Amongst other activities, FCA equips and builds bomb shelters for schools, repairs schools and organises psychosocial support training for teachers.
\u00a0
War significantly increases the risk of\u00a0mental health\u00a0problems, and children\u00a0in particular\u00a0need support\u00a0to deal with\u00a0their\u00a0trauma and\u00a0believe\u00a0in the future. Last\u00a0year, an independent evaluation <\/a>showed that children, parents and teachers benefit significantly from the support provided by FCA in the midst of the crisis. The evaluation highlighted that more support is needed, especially in rural areas, and that more psychologists are needed. Ensuring the continuity of children’s schooling and long-term support were also identified as important areas for further support.

FCA’s\u00a0Executive\u00a0Director\u00a0Tomi J\u00e4rvinen<\/strong>\u00a0points\u00a0out\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0large-scale relief work is thanks to the support of donors.

“The\u00a0situation\u00a0in\u00a0Ukraine\u00a0is\u00a0now\u00a0extremely\u00a0difficult.\u00a0We\u00a0are\u00a0very\u00a0grateful\u00a0that,\u00a0despite\u00a0the\u00a0protracted war, Finns have continued their support. This has enabled children and young people to attend school, receive support in dealing with trauma, and have the presence of safe adults in a turbulent environment. Together, we have been able to main hope and ensure that children’s right to attend school and build a future is realised as well as is possible,” says J\u00e4rvinen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since\u00a02022, 109,805\u00a0children\u00a0and 8,761\u00a0teachers\u00a0in\u00a0Ukraine\u00a0have\u00a0benefited\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0work\u00a0of Finn Church Aid.\u00a0We\u00a0have\u00a0repaired\u00a045\u00a0schools\u00a0(with\u00a0a\u00a0total\u00a0of 22,521\u00a0students),\u00a0repaired\u00a0and\/or\u00a0equipped\u00a0132\u00a0bomb\u00a0shelters\u00a0(benefiting\u00a0a\u00a0total\u00a0of 29,868\u00a0students).\u00a0

A\u00a0total\u00a0of 7,805\u00a0children\u00a0and\u00a0young\u00a0people\u00a0and 5,862 teachers have participated in FCA’s psychosocial support programmes. We have also trained 2,910 teachers in psychosocial support skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 9,641 children and young people in Ukraine have participated in summer clubs organised with FCA’s support. 4,970 people have benefited from 34 digital learning spaces, and 920 students have been able to use 15 different temporary learning spaces.
